The survey states that foreigners in Vietnam are the priority of specialist medical knowledge

By choosing healthcare services in Vietnam, foreign residents prioritize the specialist knowledge of doctors, as agreed from the newly issued survey.

The study conducted by Indochina Research Vietnam Ltd. emphasizes key information on the preferences of health care of foreigners living in large cities, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, da Nang, and maybe. Vinmec, a leading private network of hospitals in Vietnam, conducts brand awareness, and most respondents identify it as a preferred healthcare supplier.

“This first survey is a valuable resource for the healthcare institutions in Vietnam, offering them key data on the needs, expectations and feedback on the previous foreign experiences of residents of healthcare facilities in four key cities.” said Xavier Depouilly, general director of Indochina Research Vietnam.

The study was conducted at the beginning of 2025 in key city districts in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Can. Using a mixture of direct and internet surveys, research collected observations from foreign citizens at the age of 18 and older who used or were aware of medical facilities in Vietnam.

In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, participants needed three months in Vietnam and intended to remain six more. At Da Nang and Can Tho, respondents had to live in Vietnam for at least one month, with plans to stay for the next six months.

According to research, 80% of respondents in Hanoi, 71% in Ho Chi Minh City and 78% at Da Nang, know Vinmec services, placing the hospital at the top of the charts of consciousness in all surveyed cities. Family medical practice, Hanoi French Hospital and FV Hospital are other best healthcare facilities identified in the study.

Among the factors affecting healthcare choices, foreigners in Vietnam is the priority of doctors (53%), followed by the availability of advanced medical equipment (48%) and the quality of patient care or empathy (40%). These preferences remain consistent in all cities, although location specific preferences are visible.

Over the past two years, 88% of emigrants have been involved in the healthcare facilities in Vietnam, mainly in individual health problems. Services most often sought after include routine health assessments (48%), dental (39%) and standard medical advice (38%). On the other hand, cosmetic improvements and mental health support are rarely used or based, with only 3% of participation.

Looking to the future, 87% of respondents plan to use medical services in Vietnam over the next 6-12 months. Dental care (59%) and health controls (58%) are the most expected services.

In the case of treating adults, Vinmec is consistently assessed as the best choice in all regions. Meanwhile, when it comes to pediatric care, family medical practice takes the lead.

In the case of emergency care, preferences vary depending on the city. Vinmec and FV Hospital are the best types in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, respectively. Vinmec is the first choice in Danang, while foreigners in what the University of Medicine prefer as the best option.

Because Vietnam is still growing as the Center for International Business and Medical Tourism, understanding the preferences of health care for foreign residents is of key importance.
Xavier emphasized: “We hope that these discoveries will contribute to improving the quality and scope of healthcare services for emigrants and their families, and they support the development of medical services in Vietnam.”
