Taking antipsychotics reduces the risk of driver failure with schizophrenia

According to new studies published in (), taking antipsychotics in accordance with the prescription of the risk of a car accident for drivers with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia can cause hallucinations and unorganized behavior that affect the ability to safely operate the motor vehicle. Most people with schizophrenia have been prescribed antipsychotics that improve many of these symptoms. Scientists have hypothesized that these drugs can also reduce the risk of engine vehicle failure – but only if patients still take medications as recommended.

Dr John A. Staples and colleagues from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, used 20 years of health and population data to examine 1130 engine vehicle failures with the participation of controllers with diagnosis of schizophrenia and previous treatment of antipsychotics. They discovered that taking antipsychotic drugs as recommended significantly reduced the chances of failure.

We found that perfect adhesion to antipsychotics (in relation to complete illegaling) was associated with a 50% reduction in the chances of failure. We believe that our results suggest that antipsychotics reduce the risk of failure among people with schizophrenia. “

Discoveries have important implications.

“Our results are one more reason for doctors and family members to encourage people with schizophrenia to take their antipsychotics in accordance with the recommendations. We believe that our results also suggest that healthcare systems should introduce more resources in programs supporting antipsychotics among people with schizophrenia,” says Dr. Staples.

He adds: “If a driver with schizophrenia does not take medication as recommended, should their driving license be temporarily suspended? This approach deserves some consideration. But we also know that people with schizophrenia are often marginalized, with limited possibilities of employment and social commitment. Taking their driving license can make them more isolated.
